Watermelon by Marian Keyes5/24/2023 Claire takes her 2 day old baby and flies from London to Dublin. Very early on in the book I had a wobble. So when James slips back into her life, desperate to put things right, Claire doesn’t know whether to take a chance on a past she feared she’d lost forever or face an uncertain future of her own.īut is she as on her own as she really believes?” While Anna is too busy having out-of her-head experiences. Helen wants to share the new toy (she means baby Kate). So she follows the instincts of all self-respecting adults in tricky situations.īut while her parents are sympathetic, Claire’s younger sisters are less so. Right for who exactly? Exhausted, tearful and a tiny bit furious, Claire can’t think of what to do. “On the day she gives birth to her first child, Claire Walsh’s husband James tells her he’s been having an affair and now’s the right time to leave her. I recently read The Break by Marian Keyes and really enjoyed it – so when my 2017 Reading Challenge suggested ‘ the first book in a series’ I thought I’d go back to the start of Marian’s writing and read the first book in her series about the Walsh sisters.

She is sitting picturesquely in her big conservatory, a feature of perhaps the other most famous noir thriller of the 1940s, The Big Sleep. The iced tea the love interest is drinking is straight out of Double Indemnity (a film later referenced by Marlowe as he speaks, inevitably, to a young would-be starlet). I wonder whether there’s such a thing as trope-crawling, because that’s what Banville seems to be doing here. When his (fairly perfunctory) first investigations come to nothing he pays a visit to her seafront mansion and, after she’s told him more of the story, they end up kissing. She is Clare Cavendish, daughter of a woman who has made a fortune in the perfume business, and he is fascinated by her. We get the classic opening scene as the good-looking dame visits Marlowe’s office with a mysterious job for him. So far the plot is thin, and I’m practically half-way through already. I’m spending as much time speculating on what that something might be as on the latest twist in the plot. But I imagine that Banville, a serious literary novelist, must have something more than imitation on his mind. Not plausible as in I believe any of it, but in terms of holding up as a Raymond Chandler pastiche. A Philip Marlowe novel written by John Banville? Can it ever be any more than a pastiche, like those James Bonds that people are writing now, or the new sequel to the Stieg Larsson The Girl With… franchise? I don’t know yet.

When the rain ended, Doll got to her feet, awkwardly with the child in her arms, and tucked the shawl around her as well as she could. Doll may have been the loneliest woman in the world, and she was the loneliest child, and there they were, the two of them together, keeping each other warm in the rain. And now you got the fever." But the child just lay against her, hoping to stay where she was, hoping the rain wouldn't end. Doll said, "I should have knowed it was coming on rain. I got to find a dry place." And then they sat on the ground, on pine needles, Doll with her back against a tree and the child curled into her lap, against her breast, hearing the beat of her heart, feeling it. The whisper said, "I got to find a place to put you down. Lila knew it couldn't have been the way she remembered it, as if she were carried along in the wind, and there were arms around her to let her know she was safe, and there was a whisper at her ear to let her know that she shouldn't be lonely. And she was strong enough that even an awkward burden like a leggy child could rest in her arms almost asleep. She could walk quickly when there was no light at all. The road wasn't really much more than a path, but Doll had walked it so often in the dark that she stepped over the roots and around the potholes and never paused or stumbled.

Evan winter the fires of vengeance5/24/2023 You bleed through every page of the book and you have to be strong so that you don’t fall victim to these feelings. The subject matter of the book is not exceptional, as it is a revenge story, but the emotions that the book conveys make you feel for it. The crucial thing in this book was the emotions and in this the emotions are ostensibly dominated by bad emotions – pain, hate, sadness, despair and everything else that comes to mind that gets you down was included here. These aspects attracted me the most while reading. For only if the capital can be retaken can Tsiora reclaim her throne and reunite her people, but in doing so she must defy her own sister so that the Omehi have a chance to survive against the coming encroachment. For the capital is ruled by none other than her sister, who now claims to be the true queen. For stopping, the attack only serves to allow the Queen and her fellow riders to gather their strength so that a major attack can be launched against their own capital. Tau and Queen Tsiora are desperate to stay alive against an impending attack against the natives of Xidda, so they create a dangerous plan so this attack can be stopped. “Keep fighting, and I swear that before it consumes us, we’ll burn our pain to ash in the fires of vengeance.”

Never let me go5/24/2023 One of the most intense forms of loss is control. Throughout the novel, the characters experience different forms of loss. From a young age each clone has a prevailing fear of life beyond the fences as their “guardians” and peers imbue an undying dread to prevent anyone from leaving the property of Hailsham. During the clones’ young life they are bound to Hailsham, their home and exclusive boarding school. Through the use of the first person from the perspective of Kathy whose life takes place over three parts, Hailsham, The Cottage and Norfolk are the three significant locations where she experiences different forms of loss from a personal perspective. The Characters growth plants the themes of Loss, Perils of Friendship and Identity. Throughout the novel, the protagonist Kathy confronts her life’s losses by preserving her memories of her life at Hailsham and friends Tommy and Ruth after their death. The dystopian scientific novel written by Kazuo Ishiguro serves as a testament to the power of memory.

The Lighthouse by P.D. James5/24/2023 James’s novels and this one was no exception, the plotting was brilliant with many of the limited number of suspects having a reason to what the victim bumped off, it wasn’t at all easy to detect who the perpetrator was with my thoughts changing as the story progressed. This way you can concentrate on helping the police from the side-lines without any emotional involvement wasted. I say the best tradition because it is far easier to read about murder when there is a part of you that can’t help feel that it isn’t any great loss to the world. In the best traditions of this kind of murder mystery is that the dead person wasn’t exactly a likeable person. They all drop there current work and hurry to the island. Even better this island is used as a retreat for under-pressure men and women, only those of the better classes need apply of course.Īt the time of the unexplained death on the island was preparing for some very important guests and so the murder needs the brightest and the best to investigate, so that would be Commander Adam Dalgliesh, DI Kate Miskin and Sergeant Francis Benton-Smith. James has therefore sensibly chosen the secluded island of Combe off the coast of Cornwall. One of the only reasonable places for this set-up has to be an island which no-one can get to, and of course no-one can leave. This is quite hard to make believable even in times gone by, but in more modern settings it has to be a challenge to have a cast iron setting. One of my favourite tropes in mystery novels one where there is a limited number of suspects.
