Capitalism and freedom5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Highlighting the event will be a pair of keynote addresses, one by Michael C. “Friedman likely would have been among the first to recognize the importance of open dialogue and multiple perspectives within the role of freedom.” ![]() “It is important to honor the book and to do so in a way that helps students to see the importance of a multifaceted approach,” said Nicholas Snow, assistant professor of economics and the Tom and Anne Walsh Professor of Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. Further, student engagement is a key component of the colloquium’s scheduled events. The colloquium will honor the impact of the book and highlight Wabash’s connection to the original idea by using PPE’s interdisciplinary approach to inspire thoughtful dialogue from multiple and differing perspectives. In the original preface to Capitalism and Freedom, Friedman traced the book’s origin to a series of lectures he gave at Wabash in 1956. The colloquium commemorates the 60th anniversary of the book’s publication by providing a forum for critical examination and re-evaluation of its ideas and legacy. The Wabash College program in philosophy, politics, and economics (PPE) will host a colloquium on Capitalism and Freedom, the seminal book by Milton Friedman, with a handful of events on Feb. ![]()

The New York Times also doesn’t have backlist books, just new releases. So the USA Today list is very sales-based, whereas the Times one isn’t. It’s not the same as the USA Today list, which pulls from BookScan directly and is literally just the point of scale through BookScan. Again, no one knows what their formula is - they’ll tell you it’s not necessarily just based on strict sales, but also momentum and all these other intangible factors. ![]() The Times gets reports from those stores every week who tell them how many copies of each book they’ve sold. We don’t technically know which stores report, but it’s sort of an open secret in the industry which stores are reporting, which is how these people were able to game the system - by figuring out which stores were reporting and making some phone calls there to make it work for them. They track book outlets across the country, including the big ones like Barnes & Noble, but also independent booksellers, which is how they weight their list. They have their secret formula about how they put it all together. ![]() So how does the New York Times best-seller list work, to the best of our knowledge?
